Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins looks set to leave St. James Park and join German side Wolfsburg for a fee reported to be in around £9 million. The Nigerian striker joined Newcastle from Inter Milan in August 2006.

Now it seems Martins is ready to move onto better things, with Newcastle relegated to the Championship and Wolfsburg the new champions on Germany, it will certainly be a step up for the pacey striker. Martins scored 35 goals in total for Newcastle.

So is this end for Newcaslte. Managerless, relegated, looking for a new owner and just lost 6-1 against Leyton Orient, can things get any worse. As for Wolfsburg, is this the start of their dominance in Germany. They certainly have a very good team, and if they can keep their star players such as Dzeko and Grafite and add players of the calibre of Martins, i see no reason why they won't challenge for the Bundesliga title again next year.

England footballer James Milner’s house was targeted by burglars while he was playing at Wembley.

The thieves tried to force their way in as the Aston Villa midfielder made a second half appearance in England’s 2-1 win over Slovenia on Saturday.

His girlfriend discovered the bungled break-in when she returned to his home near Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, after the match.

She would not comment. But Det Chief Insp Paul Keasey said: “It’s a shame someone representing his country in sport should be targeted like this.”

James Milner believes Saturday's friendly international against Brazil in Doha will be the ideal yardstick to demonstrate whether England should be considered serious World Cup contenders next summer.

Fabio Capello's side qualified for the 2010 finals in South Africa in impressive fashion with two games to spare, and won nine of their qualifying matches.

Milner sees the clash with the former world champions as a chance to see how good England are in reality and the winger would dearly love for the game to be a dress rehearsal for the final in eight months' time.

The 23-year-old said: "This is a great preparation game. You obviously want to play the best teams before a major tournament.

"If I was lucky enough to get on the field against a team like Brazil it would be fantastic, but it is all preparation for the summer. There are not too many better teams to test yourself against, and see how ready you are for a World Cup, than playing Brazil.

"They have been fantastic over the years and it would be nice to play them in the final next summer."

Milner has forced his way into Capello's plans after showing excellent form for Aston Villa since his club record £12m switch from Newcastle 15 months ago, and he knows he must make every minute count for club and country if he is secure a seat on the plane to South Africa.

He said: "The World Cup is a long way away. It is a nice thing to have at the end of the domestic season and definitely something to aim for.

"I am not thinking about that too much at the moment. I am taking each game as it comes and playing as well as I can for Villa. That is what gets you into the England squad.


"I need to keep working hard, keep improving with Villa, and playing good football. I do believe every minute on the pitch is important, not just for England but week in and week out in the Premier League.

"You are playing against top-class players week in and week out. If you are lucky enough to get called into the England squad, and get the chance to get on the field, you've got to do well and prove that you should be chosen again. But then all the players want to keep improving and staking a claim to be in the squad."

Milner is delighted to have made the breakthrough at full level for his country and was even used as a left-back by Capello in the latter stages of the win over Belarus last month.

He said: "When you are working as hard as you can all the way through your career, and have played a lot of Under-21 games, to get the full caps is obviously nice.

One thing I've learned from being an avid Villa supporter, is that they need the opposition to attack for their strategies to play out. Arsenal is famously a very attack-focused side. Wenger recently said something along the lines of "Defence? I'm perfectly happy with us scoring more goals than the other team", so we can expect an extremely fast-paced, exciting game.

Arsenal have consecutive matches against the "big-four" in matches after this, so I assume Villa will try to spread play and attack very often in order to soften up the Gunners for their next few fixtures.

A tendency to falter midway through the league season is not the only unpleasant trend that Aston Villa have learned to buck, as they proved at Prestfields on Sunday when two James Milner goals propelled them to the fourth round of the Cup for only the second time in eight seasons. Gillingham left seething at the perceived injustice of the decisive penalty but Martin O’Neill was relieved simply to lead his Villa players away triumphant, and relatively unscarred, from a battle he described as “blood and thunder”.

Milner, scoring twice on his 23rd birthday, provided Villa with their reprieve after Simeon Jackson had equalised for the League Two side with a finish suggesting all the polish of a Premier League striker. Rather than contemplating a glamorous replay at Villa Park, the more prosaic reality that Jackson faced was a league match against Aldershot next weekend for his next assignment. And all that Gillingham captain Adam Miller could cling to was the shirt given to him by Villa’s Ashey Young – ironic, given that the winger had, just minutes earlier, found himself the focus of his opponents’ ire.


It was Miller who had sent Young sprawling theatrically in the box to concede the penalty and, starstruck though he was by the sight of the shirt, he was not about to shelve his grievances. “Everybody saw that it was soft and believe me, it was soft,” he said. Young was barracked from all sides on this numbingly cold Kent afternoon and Mark Stimson, the Gillingham manager, was inclined to sympathise with the chastened home supporters. “Having seen it, I think it was harsh but it’s a lesson to learn,” he said. “But if you’re going to go for the ball, you’ve got to be 100 per cent sure, otherwise you give the decision over to the referee and sometimes they do get them wrong.”


O’Neill professed to have had no view of the same incident and spoke only of his satisfaction that Villa had surmounted a “very difficult” test. Gillingham had torn into their more exalted opponents with abandon, Miller reflecting ruefully that their impressive if brief exposure on lunchtime television was “over too quickly”. O’Neill said: “If the players didn't know beforehand they were in some game, after about 10 minutes they did. We got a great goal and it settled us down a little but I never felt comfortable all afternoon. I thought that Gillingham were always in the game – it was in the balance.”

The balance was tipped, ultimately, by Milner’s acute eye for goal; the midfielder having stepped admirably into the breach left by Gabriel Agbonlahor, who had called in sick. The most innocuous errors cost Gillingham, as was illustrated after 13 minutes when Miller lost possession on the edge of the area only to find Milner, combining clinically with Stiliyan Petrov, ready to pounce with an elegant curling strike. But Villa were not uniformly convincing, the teenager Nathan Delfouneso unsteady in attack and Curtis Davies culpable for a clutch of botched clearances at the back.

James Milner, the 24 year old mid fielder has just been named PFA Young Player of the year. He has scored an astounding 11 goals from midfield for Aston Villa this season.

He has helped the Aston Villa finish sixth place in the Premier League and reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

Because of his latest achieved title, Milner is now part of the 23-man England squad for the World Cup in South Africa, under Fabio Capello.

An Aston Villa spokesman said that indeed they have received an offer from Manchester City for James Milner but it was firmly rejected.

“We plan to sit down with James and his representative after the World Cup to agree a new long-term deal and this remains our position, added the spokesman”

Milner is still under contract and halfway through since he signed in for four years stay for only £12m in 2008 to play for Aston Villa.

Randy Lerner, the owner of Aston Villa, said they would do everything there is to do for James Milner to stay in their club.

However, James Milner said he wouldn’t commit to Aston Villa. He said he would have to put his future on clubs on hold because he will have to focus on the World Cup.

In his own words, Milner said “Do I expect to be at Villa next season? I don’t know. I’ve worked as hard as I can and concentrated on club football while the season has been on.

Milner says he will have to put his 100% focus on helping England achieve its glory in South Africa.

James Milner says, “The World Cup is the biggest competition you can play in. The whole world is watching. As a player, you want to play against the best players, test yourself, and play in the best tournaments, whether its the Champions League or World Cups.”

“Every player is desperate to get on the plane to South Africa and prove themselves on the biggest stage,” he adds.

Big-spending Manchester City have finally landed midfielder James Milner from Aston Villa supposedly completing a very expensive squad make-over.

The two clubs finally agreed a deal for the England international: a £26m player-plus-cash exchange with City’s Stephen Ireland being the £8m makeweight going the other way. Ireland, an attacking midfielder as well, will receive around half of the £2m he demanded, for his part in the transfer.

Both players have already agreed personal terms and an official announcement will be made soon, after both have passed routine medical examinations.


The signing of Milner comes after a three-month pursuit, which also indirectly led to Martin O’Neill’s resignation as Villa’s manager because of the lack of money provided by club owner Randy Lerner to sign new players.

City manager Roberto Mancini was quoted as saying about Milner: “I think that Milner is a good player, an English player which is important. I think that Milner can play in different positions.”

Milner, Villa’s player of the year, is likely to be the final arrival of another summer of extensive incomings and outgoings at City, with Mario Balotelli, Yaya Touré, Jérôme Boateng, Aleksandar Kolarov and David Silva also being added to the squad at a total cost of £126m.
