David Villa Liverpool

I’ve noticed that on a lot of football forums, both Liverpool and Spurs fans are claiming that Robbie Keane is past it; Spurs fans say it because they’re sad to see him go, Liverpool fans say it because perhaps they would rather sign a younger buck like David Villa.
Repeat after me: Robbie Keane is not past it. Robbie Keane is not past it. Robbie Keane is not past it. Robbie Keane is not past it. Robbie Keane is not past it…
Keane is 28 (and only just), not 33. He was born in the 80s, for God’s sake. He’s in his prime, as he showed last season, when he was Tottenham’s best player. Want to know why Dimitar Berbatov settled into English football so quickly? Because he was playing alongside Keane, who is one of the most generous, intelligent forwards around. Rafa Benitez knows that, and I’m sure Juande Ramos will discover it to his cost in the coming season.

David Villa Spain

Barcelona’s new striker David Villa scored the only goal of the match between Spain and Portugal last night to see the European Champions beat the Portuguese 1 – 0 at Cape Town Stadium.

Villa pounced in the 63rd minute of an absorbing encounter that saw plenty of chances and Portugal’s Ricardo Costa sent off, chipping a rebound over goalkeeper Eduardo after his first shot was saved.

It was enough to put Spain into a last eight showdown on Saturday against the South Americans, who crushed Japanese hopes in a dramatic 5-3 penalty shoot-out earlier in the day.

Whoever gets through that match has either Argentina or Germany awaiting them in the semi-finals.

In a stadium packed to the rafters with Spanish and Portuguese fans, Spain quickly signalled their intentions with Fernando Torres testing Eduardo with a shot from the edge of the box in the opening minute.

Soon after he earned his first international call-up and cap, Valencia decided to take a chance on him and parted with 12 million (8.2 million) to secure his services in the summer of 2005. Villa managed the hat trick in just over 5 minutes (80th to the 85th minute) making it one of the quickest hat-tricks ever recorded. Villa's form continued into the 200607 season, with the striker forming a prolific partnership up front with former Real Madrid star Fernando Morientes. Together, Villa and Morientes netted around 40 goals in all competitions, and also ousted Ral Gonzlez from the Spanish national squad. He scored a free kick goal in the 2nd round of the Champions League against Inter Milan which helped lead Valencia through to the quarter finals where they eventually lost to Chelsea FC.
